What the Just Transition Means for Moray — and How Boundless Trails Fits In

The Just Transition Fund is a Scottish Government initiative supporting Scotland’s move towards a greener, fairer future — one where the shift to net zero doesn’t leave anyone behind. It’s about helping communities in the North East and Moray adapt to a changing economy, create local opportunities, and improve wellbeing while reducing carbon emissions. This year, £333,333 is being distributed in Moray through a Participatory Budgeting process — meaning local people decide which community projects will receive funding.

We’re proud that Boundless Trails CIC has been shortlisted for the fund with our project Trails to Wellbeing – Mountain Biking for Mental Health.

🚴 Trails to Wellbeing – supporting people through the outdoors

Trails to Wellbeing offers up to six free, referral-based mountain biking sessions for people aged 12+ who may be experiencing anxiety, low mood, or social isolation. Sessions are delivered in small groups or 1:1, and are inclusive, trauma-aware, and fully equipped — we provide bikes, e-bikes, helmets, and gloves to make the outdoors accessible to everyone. Our first referral pathway is already live through Maryhill Group Practice in Elgin, with additional links now established with Forres GP and local Link Workers through social prescribing. After the initial sessions, participants are supported to continue through community rides and local groups, building confidence, connection, and long-term wellbeing.

💚 How Boundless Trails supports a Just Transition

At its heart, Trails to Wellbeing reflects the key goals of a Just Transition — combining environmental action with social inclusion.

🌍 Environmental benefits

  • Promotes low-carbon, active travel through cycling and e-bikes.

  • Reduces car use by sharing bikes and transport via our trailer.

  • Uses secure, weather-protected storage to extend equipment life and reduce waste.

🧭 Social benefits

  • Improves mental health, confidence, and social connection through time in nature.

  • Strengthens partnerships with GPs, Link Workers, and community groups to make wellbeing support accessible.

  • Ensures fair access — all sessions and equipment are free, removing financial barriers.

By linking wellbeing, sustainability, and community connection, Boundless Trails contributes to both the environmental and social outcomes the Just Transition Fund aims to achieve — a healthier, more connected Moray.
